Lucy & Nate’s Black & White Garden Wedding
Lucy & Nate
October 21, 2017
Glencoe, IL
Lucy and Nate met while attending college at the University of Denver and fell in love during their sophomore year. One wonderful morning in 2016, Lucy woke up to find Nate on one knee with flowers and a Starbucks cup that read “Mrs. Putnam.” With the help of Allison DeYoung of LK Events, the couple began planning their wedding for October of the following year at the Chicago Botanic Garden in the bride’s hometown of Glencoe, IL. It was an unseasonably warm Midwest autumn day. Lucy looked stunning in beautiful ivory separates from BHLDN and carried a bouquet of cream roses. The wedding party dressed in black—bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses and Nate and his groomsmen donned classic black tuxedos and bow ties. Guests enjoyed hot cider as the couple exchanged vows in the Grand Allee, then made their way to the English Walled Garden for cocktails.
A candlelit path led to a tented outdoor reception, with cream and blush floral centerpieces by Revel Decor, beige linen napkins, rustic cross-back chairs and a cozy lounge area that overlooked a large pond. After enjoying a plated meal by the venue’s in-house chef, the newlyweds cut into a rose-covered classic white cake with fresh raspberries and lemon filling. The couple shared their first dance, then celebrated with their guests for the rest of the evening as Lakeshore Encores of Gold Coast Events entertained with a variety of music.

“My dress was from BHNDL. Never would have imagined wearing separates, but I ended up falling in love with a satin bustier with a lace overtop and a silk skirt. For dancing I removed the lace over top and added a beaded sash. The braid in my hair accompanied the vintage bohemian look and went well with the CBG vibe. I asked my bridesmaids to get any long black dress they wanted and most girls opted for Jenny Yoo. They looked beautiful and timeless!” -Lucy
“It was the last Saturday in October—kind of a gamble for an outdoor ceremony, but it ended up being in the 70s. The ceremony was in the Grand Allee, a tree lined spot in the garden. We then moved to the English Walled Garden for cocktails. At sunset, we made our way on a candle lit walkway to the McGinley Pavilion, a covered tent patio overlooking a large pond. Dream come true.” -Lucy
“Flowers and décor courtesy of Revel Décor. Because of the flowers at the Botanic Garden, we didn’t want our flowers to compete with the natural background. Also, we didn’t want anything too feminine or “Halloweeny”, given the October timing. Cream color roses and blush dahlias with greenery mixed in with beautiful candle arrangements. Chuppah was also covered in roses and greenery. Revel provided café lights to extend the mood. The icing on the cake was a lounge setup, outside on the patio. This provided intimate seating, where guests could sit and overlook the water. My mother fittingly provided a basket of University of Denver blankets to keep guests warm. Revel also incorporated an ivory bouquet holder, a family heirloom from the 1800s.” -Lucy
