Emily & Jon’s Joyful and Unapologetically Nerdy Walden Wedding
Embracing the moody charm of a Chicago winter, Emily and Jon crafted a wedding day that captured their love story. Set at the Walden venue on a crisp January evening, the celebration glowed with candlelight, heartfelt nods to their favorite movies, tributes to Emily’s Chinese heritage and a perfect mix of romance and playful, nerdy nostalgia.
Emily and Jon’s story began in 8th-grade Spanish class, or at least that’s where their paths first crossed. Fast forward two decades and they reconnected via a dating app. From their very first date, filled with laughter and endless conversation, Jon knew Emily was something special. “After that first night, I knew I loved her. She was exactly who I always thought she would be and even funnier than I remembered,” he shared.
A connection like this deserved a wedding just as special. From the moment guests arrived, they were enveloped in a cozy glow that felt like a hug. Flickering candles framed the couple’s welcome sign, casting a warm glow on the custom illustration by Kristine Steiner. The decor leaned into rich winter hues — forest green, deep burgundy, dark silver and raisin. Lush greenery and striking panda anemones provide pops of contrast. The couple made a bold style statement by asking guests to wear black. This allowed Jon’s forest green suit and Emily’s champagne ivory gown from The Crystal Bride to truly shine.
Their shared love for Disney Pixar was front and center, with references to Wall-E and UP woven throughout. The couple used Wall-E’s “Define Dancing” as their processional song, featured Wall-E and Eve cake toppers, and even incorporated Carl and Ellie’s UP mailbox as their card box. The reception decor also honored Emily’s Chinese heritage, with glowing Chinese lanterns nestled among disco balls and greenery. Not to mention a showstopping Chinese Lion Dance kicking off the dance floor festivities.
Adding to the personal touches, Jon curated every single playlist for the day. From the pre-ceremony music to the dinner soundtrack, he made sure the vibe perfectly matched each moment. And, of course, their two beloved cats made multiple appearances throughout! Harvey and Duck were featured on the welcome sign, the drink menu and even as cutouts on the dance floor.
Ultimately, Emily and Jon wanted their guests to feel precisely what they experience when surrounded by their love: warmth, romance, thoughtfulness, and joy. With soft candlelight, heartfelt nods to their shared story, and surprises at every turn, they succeeded in creating a celebration as unique and unforgettable as their bond.
