Beyond the Aisle: Rehearsal Dinner
What
The rehearsal dinner is the last official celebration before the wedding itself! After you and your wedding party rehearse the ceremony at the venue, you’ll head to dinner to celebrate with close relatives and friends. While you and your partner’s parents, best man/maid and maid/man of honor will give speeches at the reception itself, the rehearsal dinner is time for other guests to share their fond memories and well wishes. For a special touch, you can put together a slideshow or video presentation full of scenes from your relationship to watch after or during dinner. Dinner and a show!
Who
The rehearsal dinner is for immediate family and the wedding party (and anyone who is involved in the ceremony itself), but invitations can also be extended to out-of-town guests.
It’s traditional for the groom’s parents to host the rehearsal. However, modern couples just as frequently host the dinner themselves.
When
The night before the wedding.
Where
Optimal locations for rehearsal dinners include private rooms at restaurants, private residences or event halls. The key is to keep it nearby! Ideally, the rehearsal dinner should be held within a 20-mile radius to the guests’ hotel or your wedding venue. Guests are in town to celebrate with you, so you don’t want to inconvenience them with too many long commutes throughout the weekend. It’s always helpful to provide clear directions or arrange transportation for guests, making their travel easier and more enjoyable.
The rehearsal dinner is the perfect time to introduce some personal details about your relationship. Is your favorite date night at a local restaurant? Host the rehearsal dinner there. Was your first date at a micro-brewery? Serve brews from that brewery. If your wedding is far from memorable spots, showcase your chosen destination’s local cuisine.
